Late-Career Unemployment: Financing a Project Before Your Pension Starts

Temporary unemployment benefit and a pension still some way off: to borrow, you need to bridge the gap between the two. Practical solutions and the lenders that remain open.

Between losing a job and drawing a pension, an older person in France can still borrow, but rarely on unemployment benefit alone. Lenders look at what will secure repayment: a spouse in work, a severance payment, a confirmed retirement date or a business plan. Microcredit from the Adie and the Crédits municipaux remain the most accessible fallbacks.

A jobseeker aged 57 or 60 often receives the ARE (allocation d'aide au retour à l'emploi, the main French unemployment benefit), calculated on the former salary and paid for longer than for younger claimants. The income is real but temporary, and the bank's worry is the period between the end of entitlement and the first pension payment. The whole strategy is about covering that gap.

What lenders accept, and what makes them nervous

Unemployment benefit is not ruled out on principle; it is income with an expiry date. A lender will count it for a loan whose term does not exceed your remaining entitlement, or where another income takes over. For a longer loan it will look for something permanent: a spouse's salary, an invalidity pension, rental income or a pension with a known start date.

Using your future pension as evidence

A career statement and an overall pension estimate, downloadable from the joint portal of French pension schemes, put a figure on the pension to come. If you will retire within two years, for example under the long-career early retirement rules, some lenders agree to work from that amount, provided your benefit covers the interval without a break. Anyone with years worked in the UK, Ireland or the US should include the foreign pension forecast as well.

Patrick, 60: the numbers

Made redundant at 59, Patrick receives 1,650 euros a month in benefit, with 22 months of entitlement left. His pension estimate is 1,900 euros, starting just after his benefit ends. He wants 6,000 euros for a new car. Over 36 months at 6.5%, the instalment is around 184 euros, 11% of his benefit. The file is acceptable to a lender who reads the two documents together.

Severance pay as a deposit

A redundancy payment or a negotiated departure settlement (rupture conventionnelle) can mean borrowing less. Putting part of it towards the project lowers the instalment and reassures the bank. Keep a safety reserve of several months' spending, however, because the pension may arrive later than expected.

Starting a business with a microloan

Many unemployed people in their late fifties set up a micro-enterprise to make use of their trade. The Adie lends 300 to 15,000 euros for a business project, over 48 months at most, whatever the borrower's situation, including jobseekers and people on minimum benefits. The rate starts at 8.4% as of 6 July 2026, plus a solidarity contribution of 6%.

Sylvie, 57, opens a bookkeeping practice

A former accountant, Sylvie needs 6,000 euros for a computer, software and a website. The Adie lends her that sum over 36 months at 8.4%, about 189 euros a month, plus a 360-euro solidarity contribution. Her sister guarantees 3,000 euros. Business start-up support paid by France Travail, the national employment service, tops up her benefit during the launch.

The Lyon Crédit municipal and the Adie

The Crédit municipal de Lyon has financed micro-entrepreneurs shut out of the banking system in partnership with the Adie for more than twenty years, supporting over 370 projects in 2024. For a senior living in the Rhône, it is an extra way in, and it also points applicants to the nearest Adie office.

Keeping an eye on pension quarters

A self-employed activity started at 58 can also earn pension quarters if turnover is high enough. Check with your pension fund how setting up a business affects your retirement date and how it combines with unemployment benefit.

How to proceed, one step at a time

  1. Ask France Travail for a statement of entitlement showing the daily amount and the end date of benefit.
  2. Download your career record and a pension estimate, and have missing quarters corrected.
  3. Take stock of your savings, severance pay and any income your spouse earns.
  4. Choose a loan term that ends before your benefit runs out, or document the hand-over to your pension.
  5. For a business project, book an Adie appointment with a financing plan and the name of a guarantor.
  6. Compare at least two offers and turn down any revolving credit proposed to fill a cash gap.

Typical refusals and how to avoid them

The most common reason is a loan term that runs beyond your benefit with no proven hand-over. Next come repeated overdrafts since the job loss, and an application lodged just after redundancy, when the banker does not yet know how much benefit you will receive. Waiting for the first award notice, presenting the pension estimate and limiting the term usually suffice.

Should you borrow before leaving your job?

If a negotiated exit is already agreed, financing a large project while your employment contract is still running is simpler. You must, however, be honest with the lender: concealing a planned departure can count as a false declaration and allow the bank to demand immediate repayment of the whole loan (déchéance du terme).

Job-loss insurance on loans

Job-loss cover is rarely available after 55 or when redundancy is already known. If you took out such a guarantee on an earlier loan, though, check whether it can cover part of the instalments while you are on benefit.

Other sources of support

France Travail funds training and mobility aid that can avoid a loan. Supplementary pension funds may grant one-off help to working-age members in difficulty. A Point conseil budget helps you adapt your budget to benefit income. And phased retirement (retraite progressive) or early retirement for a long career can bring forward the return of a stable income.

Jobless before retirement: your questions

Does my unemployment benefit count as income? Yes, but for a limited period. A lender counts it in full for a short loan, or if another income takes over afterwards.

Can I get a mortgage while unemployed at 58? It is hard without an employed co-borrower or a large deposit. Your future pension may be taken into account, within the 35% debt limit set by the HCSF.

Does the Adie lend to older people? The Adie publishes no age limit and lends to jobseekers. Its mobility microloan is also open to retirees.

Must I tell my bank I am unemployed? When applying for credit, yes: a false declaration is penalised. For an existing loan nothing obliges you, but warning the bank early lets you negotiate a payment holiday.
