For many older people outside Dublin, a car is not a luxury but the link to the GP, the shop, Mass and the grandchildren. Replacing it on a pension is therefore one of the most common borrowing decisions Irish retirees make, and the market offers three quite different routes: a straightforward car loan from a bank or credit union, hire purchase arranged through the dealer, and PCP, which is really a variant of hire purchase with a large final payment.
This page focuses on buying a car you will own, typically a reliable second-hand model or a modest new hybrid, financed on State Pension and occupational pension income. It compares the cost of each route in euro, explains who owns the car during the agreement and why that matters after 70, and lists the checks that keep a sensible purchase from turning into a debt problem.
Three ways to finance a car in Ireland
A car loan is a personal loan used to buy a vehicle: the money is paid to you or the dealer, and you own the car from day one. Hire purchase is different: the finance company owns the car until you have made every payment, and you are effectively renting it until then. PCP is a hire purchase agreement with lower monthly payments and a final optional payment, the guaranteed minimum future value, which you pay if you want to keep the car. PCP is covered in detail on our separate car leasing page; here we concentrate on outright ownership.
Bank car loans
AIB offers car loans over one to seven years, with online applications from €1,000 to €30,000. Its published example in 2026 was €15,000 over four years at 8.65% variable (8.95% APR), costing €369.26 a month over 48 months. Banks assess the loan like any personal loan: pension income, outgoings and your Central Credit Register history. Some online channels refer older or joint applicants to a phone or branch team, which can be a quicker route to a decision for retirees.
Hire purchase through a bank's finance arm
Bank of Ireland Finance provides consumer hire purchase from €7,000, over two to five years for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars and up to six years for battery electric cars, at fixed rates (6.3% APR for most cars in 2026). One condition matters to retirees buying used: the car may be no more than nine years old at the end of the agreement. The car belongs to the finance company until the last payment and the purchase fee are paid.
Credit union car loans
Credit union car loans let you own the car immediately, with no balloon payment and no mileage limits, and the rate can never exceed 1% a month on the reducing balance. Each credit union sets its own rates, and many pay an annual interest rebate, so the real cost can be lower than the headline figure.
Comparing the costs on a €20,000 car
| Route | Rate used | Term | Monthly payment | Total interest | Who owns the car |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank car loan | 8.95% APR | 5 years | €415 | €4,880 | You, from day one |
| Hire purchase | 6.3% APR | 5 years | €389 (plus small fees) | €3,370 | Finance company until the end |
| Credit union at 7.5% | 7.5% | 7 years | €307 | €5,770 | You, from day one |
| Credit union at the ceiling | 12.68% APR | 5 years | €445 | €6,690 | You, from day one |
These figures are illustrations calculated on a fixed rate with monthly repayments. Rates change, and your own offer will depend on your circumstances.
Worked examples for Irish retirees
Kathleen, 68, Mayo. She has the contributory pension and a teacher's pension, about €3,100 a month together. She buys a three-year-old hatchback for €18,000. Her credit union lends over four years at 6.5%, about €427 a month and roughly €2,490 in total interest. The loan ends at 72, and the car is hers outright if she later needs to sell it.
Seán, 74, Donegal. A six-year-old diesel costs €12,000. Hire purchase is not available because the car would be more than nine years old at the end of a five-year agreement with his preferred finance house. A three-year bank loan at 8.95% APR (about €381 a month) is too much for his budget, so he chooses a cheaper €8,000 car over three years at around €254 a month.
Ann and Joe, 66 and 70, Tipperary. They trade in their old car for €6,000 and borrow €22,000 for a hybrid. They compare dealer hire purchase with a credit union loan and pick the credit union because there is no purchase fee, they can repay early without penalty, and the loan officer accepted their combined pensions without fuss.
Steps to finance a car on a pension
- Fix a total budget first: price, insurance, motor tax, servicing and fuel, all against your monthly pension income.
- Get a car insurance quote before buying, since premiums for drivers over 70 vary a lot between insurers.
- Ask your credit union for a quote and an indication of any year-end rebate.
- Compare that with a bank car loan and the dealer's hire purchase offer, using the APR and the total amount repayable.
- If buying used, check the car's history and confirm that no finance is outstanding on it, because a car under hire purchase belongs to the finance company.
- Read the agreement, especially early settlement terms and what happens if you hand the car back.
- Keep the withdrawal period in mind: you can still cancel the credit for a short time after signing.
Common pitfalls when older drivers borrow for a car
Buying more car than the pension can run
The repayment is only part of the cost. Insurance for older drivers, servicing on a premium brand and rising motor tax can double the true monthly outlay.
Signing for a long term at 75
A seven-year loan at 75 ends at 82. Health can change and some drivers stop driving earlier than they expect. A shorter term, or a cheaper car, protects you and avoids leaving a debt to your estate.
Not understanding ownership under hire purchase
Under hire purchase you cannot sell the car without settling the finance first. Under Irish law you can end the agreement and return the car, but you may owe up to half the total hire purchase price, so check how far you are into the agreement before doing so.
Alternatives to borrowing for a car
Buying a cheaper car for cash and keeping savings for repairs is often the most economical choice for a low-mileage driver. Some families buy a car jointly with an older relative, which needs clear agreement on insurance and ownership. Where mobility is the real issue, the Primary Medical Certificate and the related tax relief schemes for drivers and passengers with disabilities can reduce the cost of an adapted vehicle, and local Rural Link or community transport services may cover some trips. If existing debts are already a strain, speak to MABS before adding a car loan.
FAQ
Is there a maximum age for a car loan in Ireland? There is no legal maximum. Lenders apply their own policies, often asking that the loan be repaid before a certain age, and credit unions usually decide case by case.
Can I get hire purchase on a car that is ten years old? Often not. Many finance houses, including Bank of Ireland Finance, limit the car's age at the end of the agreement, so older cars are usually financed with a personal or credit union loan instead.
Will a car loan count against me if I later need a mortgage top-up? Yes, it appears on the Central Credit Register and reduces your available income in any later affordability assessment.
Can I repay early? Yes. Consumers in Ireland can repay credit early, sometimes with a modest charge on fixed-rate agreements. Variable-rate bank and credit union loans can usually be cleared without penalty.
Is a green car loan available to retirees? Yes, on the same assessment as any other car loan. AIB, for example, offers a lower-rate green personal loan for battery electric and plug-in hybrid cars.
