Disabled and Working Past 50: Financing a Project With the AAH in Your Income

Combining a salary with the adult disability allowance can make an income look steadier, not weaker, provided you document it properly and settle the insurance question early.

Yes, an employee or self-employed person who receives the AAH (allocation aux adultes handicapés, France's adult disability allowance) can borrow. Banks include the AAH in income when it has been granted for a long period, especially where the assessed incapacity rate is at least 80%. The income itself is rarely the sticking point. The difficulties lie in death and invalidity insurance, and in the share of the AAH that moves up and down with your wages.

In 2026 the AAH pays at most €1,041.59 a month in mainland France and the overseas regions other than Mayotte. Since 1 October 2023 it has been calculated on your own resources only, ignoring a spouse's or partner's income, unless the couple-based calculation works out better for you. For people aged 50 to 64 still in work, it often tops up a part-time job or an adapted post.

How the AAH and a salary fit together

When you work in an ordinary job, only part of your salary is counted thanks to earnings disregards, and the AAH becomes a differential payment: as pay rises the allowance falls, but your total income never drops. It can be combined with the prime d'activité, the in-work benefit. An invalidity pension, by contrast, reduces the AAH pound for pound, or rather euro for euro, and combining it with the ASS jobseeker's allowance is no longer possible outside transitional cases.

What the bank looks at is total income. Bring three payslips, the last three CAF payment statements and the decision letter from the MDPH (the departmental disability office) showing how long the award runs. A long award, sometimes open-ended for conditions that will not change, reassures far more than a right up for renewal in two years.

Borrower insurance: the crux of the file

An insurer may decline invalidity cover for a condition already recognised, since it predates the policy. The AERAS convention (the agreement on insurance access for people with a health risk) then provides a multi-level review and, for home and business loans, a specific invalidity guarantee. That guarantee covers, without excluding the declared condition, a person who can no longer work and has a functional incapacity rate of at least 70%.

The Lemoine law waives the health questionnaire when the insured share stays under €200,000 and the loan ends before 60; at 52, a loan of seven years or less fits. For consumer credit, insurance is not a legal requirement: the bank may accept a guarantor, a pledge of savings or a co-borrower instead.

Preparing your application in five stages
  1. Gather the MDPH decision, the CAF statements and three months of payslips.
  2. Calculate your debt ratio on stable total income, leaving out the prime d'activité.
  3. Request outside insurance quotes, mentioning the AERAS convention.
  4. Check the non-repayable aid first: PCH for adapting a vehicle or home, Agefiph grants for keeping your job.
  5. Submit the file to two lenders or through a broker, with a complete financing plan.

Case study: Nathalie, 52, buying an adapted car

Nathalie has an 80% incapacity rate and works three days a week as an administrator for €1,100 net. Her CAF pays a differential AAH of €480 a month, giving a stable income of €1,580. She has to replace her car with an automatic fitted with steering-wheel controls, for €18,000 including €3,000 of adaptations.

The PCH pays for part of the adaptations and she puts in €6,000 of savings. That leaves €10,000 to borrow over five years, about €195 a month at 6%. Her debt ratio comes to 12%. The bank counts the AAH in full because the award is long, and accepts a pledge on her savings account in place of invalidity insurance.

What makes applications fail

Grants and funding to activate before any loan

The Agefiph, the fund for the employment of disabled people, pays for workplace adjustments on top of existing schemes and grants up to €3,000 towards starting or taking over a business. Its Cap emploi network provides free support to keep you in work. The PCH, paid by the département, covers part of the cost of technical aids and home or vehicle adaptations.

Supported personal microcredit, open to people on minimum benefits who have some repayment capacity, finances up to about €8,000 for employment or mobility projects. Private-sector employees can also turn to Action Logement for a 1.5% works loan to adapt a home occupied by a disabled person. Readers who receive a disability benefit from another country should check with the CAF how it interacts with the AAH, since foreign benefits are taken into account as resources.

And as retirement approaches?

With an incapacity rate of at least 80%, the AAH can continue past the legal retirement age as a top-up to a small pension, without having to claim the ASPA minimum pension. With a rate of 50% to 79%, it stops at the legal age and the pension takes over. Banks therefore project your income to that date, so ask for a pension estimate and include it in the file.

Answers to common questions

Can the AAH be seized if I fall behind? No, the AAH cannot be seized except for maintenance debts or certain accommodation costs. Your salary remains seizable within the legal scale. This protection does not stop the bank pursuing other remedies.

Must my partner be a co-borrower? It is not compulsory, but their income strengthens the file. Since the AAH stopped depending on a partner's income, their salary no longer reduces your allowance, so you can borrow together without losing it.

Does an RQTH change anything for the bank? The RQTH, official recognition as a disabled worker, is not income. It does make it easier to keep your job and to access Agefiph help, which secures your future salary.

Can I start a business at 55 and keep the AAH? Yes. The allowance remains payable and is then calculated on your declared self-employed income. The Agefiph start-up grant of up to €3,000 can serve as the personal contribution a bank or an honour loan network asks for. Keep enough cash for the first months while the CAF adjusts your entitlement.

What if every insurer says no? For a home loan, refer the case to the AERAS mediation committee. For consumer credit, offer an alternative guarantee: a relative standing surety, a mortgage, or a pledge on an assurance-vie policy.
