Temping in France after 50: winning approval for a car loan or personal loan

Back-to-back assignments, income that varies and an age that worries banks: an older agency temp in France can still finance a car or a project with the right credit and a well-built file.

In France, a loan for an older temp worker is simply a consumer loan, most often a car loan or a personal loan, granted to someone over 50 whose income comes from intérim, the French system of agency temporary work. There is no product reserved for this profile. What makes the difference is how you present your work history and which lender you approach.

Temping after 50 is frequently a second career, following redundancy or a change of trade. Traditional banks still think in terms of the CDI (contrat à durée indéterminée, the permanent contract) and years with the same employer. Yet a temp who has worked without a break for several years carries far less risk than the absence of a permanent contract suggests, and some lenders have understood this. For English speakers who came to France and found work through an agency, the same reasoning applies; the main hurdle is usually paperwork rather than eligibility.

Which credit to aim for, depending on your temping record

The most common need is a car, essential for accepting assignments far away or on shifts. Next come home equipment, a rental deposit and sometimes the consolidation of small debts. A crédit affecté, linked to the purchase of the vehicle, protects the borrower: if the sale falls through, so does the loan, which is not true of an unrestricted personal loan.

Why hours worked carry weight

The threshold of 414 hours of temp work over the last twelve months recurs throughout the schemes of the FASTT (Fonds d'action sociale du travail temporaire), the social fund financed by the temporary-work industry. It opens access, for example, to the FASTT Confiance Bailleur rent guarantee. The broker Solutis states that the FASTT also supports car loan applications from temps who meet this condition and are on assignment, for €1,600 to €12,000 repayable over 12 to 60 months.

Building a credible average income

Add up your net pay for the last twelve months, including end-of-assignment allowances (indemnités de fin de mission) and paid-holiday allowances, then divide by twelve. Benefit paid by France Travail, the French public employment service, between assignments can be added if it recurs regularly. A serious lender reasons on that average rather than your best or worst month, so present it in a simple table with the matching statements.

Example: a used car at 54

Karim, 54, a forklift driver who has temped for four years, logged 1,520 hours last year and averaged €1,950 net a month. He pays €300 a month for a parking space and a phone contract. For an €8,000 used car he borrows the full amount over 48 months: at a 7% APR the instalment comes to €192, taking his total debt ratio to 25%, which remains acceptable.

The organisations that understand temping

The FASTT is the first port of call. Its services are free or discounted: a free rent guarantee for the first three years of a lease, covering rent, charges and damage up to €7,700, help towards a driving licence and vehicle leasing with an option to buy so you can get mobile again quickly. These aids free up budget before you even apply for a loan.

Credit brokers such as Solutis put the file to several lenders at once and know which ones accept temp work. Carmakers' finance arms also consider temps when funding a vehicle sold through a dealership. Finally, microcredit charities finance mobility for people turned away by banks, with budget support thrown in.

How a permanent temp contract changes things

The CDI intérimaire, or CDII, ties the worker to the agency through an open-ended contract, with guaranteed pay between assignments. For a lender, this contract reads almost like an ordinary CDI. If your agency offers one after several years of loyalty, accept it: it also eases renting a home and obtaining larger loans.

And if retirement is getting close?

At 60 or over, the lender looks at your age at the end of the loan and your future rights. Attach your career statement and the pension estimate available on Info Retraite, the joint French pension portal. A 48-month car loan ending after you retire can still be financed if the estimated pension covers the instalment. Temp years count normally towards the basic state pension and the Agirc-Arrco complementary pension, and periods worked in another EU country or the UK are taken into account under coordination rules.

A word on borrower insurance

Insurance is not compulsory for consumer credit, but it is often included by default. After 50, job-loss cover is rarely suited to temping, because the end of an assignment is not always treated as a dismissal. Read the exclusions and decline options you will never be able to claim on.

Putting your file together in seven steps

  1. Collect your payslips and end-of-assignment certificates for the last twelve months.
  2. Ask your main agency for a certificate of hours worked and upcoming assignments.
  3. Calculate your average monthly income and your debt ratio with the new loan.
  4. Contact the FASTT about the mobility or housing help you are entitled to.
  5. Set an amount and term that leave room for a month without work.
  6. Have the file reviewed by a broker or by the dealership's finance company.
  7. Compare APRs, check the usury ceiling is respected and sign with the 14-day withdrawal period in mind.

Why applications from older temps fail

The first cause is a recent gap between assignments, even a short one, which casts doubt on continuity. The second is the state of the accounts: repeated overdrafts, rejected direct debits or a revolving line used to the maximum. The third mistake is filling in numerous online forms with different declared incomes; when several brokers pass those versions to the same banks, the file loses all credibility.

Fixes that work

Wait until you are on an assignment before applying and attach the current assignment contract. Clean up your accounts for three months. Offer a deposit, even 10%, or a salaried co-borrower. Stick to one broker rather than five different forms. These simple moves often turn an automatic refusal into an approval after review by a person.

The legal cap on the rate

No lender may charge you more than the usury ceiling. For credit agreed from 1 October 2026 it reaches 23.60% up to €3,000, 15.76% from €3,000 to €6,000 and 8.56% above €6,000. An €8,000 car loan must therefore show an APR below 8.56%.

Alternatives to a bank loan

Questions older temps often ask

Do I absolutely need a permanent contract to get a car loan? No. Lenders accept temp work when assignments are regular. Two to three years of service and clean accounts count for more than the type of contract.

Is unemployment benefit between assignments taken into account? It can be, if it comes back each year in a predictable way. Supply the France Travail payment notices to prove that extra income.

Does the FASTT lend money itself? The FASTT is a social action fund: it supports, guarantees and provides services, then points you to financial partners. Ask its advisers about the current offer.

Can my age justify a refusal? Age alone cannot be the reason, but it affects insurance and the term. A short loan backed by regular assignments remains perfectly accessible after 55.
