Several kinds of French credit work without borrower insurance. For a personal loan or a home-improvement loan, cover is legally optional. For a pawn loan from the Crédit Municipal or a prêt viager hypothécaire (lifetime mortgage), it simply does not exist: the item left with the lender, or the home, guarantees repayment.
This matters to older borrowers for two reasons. After 50, consumer loans fall outside the AERAS rule that waives the health questionnaire, which applies only to borrowers aged 50 or under, for up to €17,000 over four years at most. Beyond that, every extra year of age raises the premium. Choosing the right product avoids both the questionnaire and the extra cost.
Four families of credit that need no insurance policy
They answer different needs. A standard instalment loan finances a project of a few thousand euros repaid monthly. A pawn loan solves a cash emergency within hours. A lifetime mortgage releases a substantial sum with no monthly payment. An advance on an assurance-vie policy lets you use your own savings without cashing them in.
| Product | Insurance | Age | Typical amount | What secures the lender |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal or cash loan | Optional | No legal limit | €1,000 to €75,000 depending on lender | Your income and banking history |
| Pawn loan (Crédit Municipal) | None | Adults | From €30 in Paris | The item deposited |
| Lifetime mortgage | None | 60 minimum | From €50,000 at Foncier Reversimmo | The mortgaged home |
| Advance on assurance-vie | None | Depends on the policy | A fraction of the savings | The policy itself |
Personal loans: optional does not mean pointless
Caisse d'Épargne presents the insurance on its cash loan as optional, as do most consumer-credit firms. A lender can still make its agreement conditional on minimum cover if your profile worries it. For a financially sound applicant of 63, a request without insurance is usually assessed in the normal way.
Example: €8,000 with no insurance at 63
Martine, 63, a medical secretary still in work on €2,050 net, borrows €8,000 over 48 months to change her car. At an APR of 6.5%, below the 8.56% usury ceiling for loans over €6,000 in the fourth quarter of 2026, the repayment comes to about €190 a month. Without insurance, she saves several hundred euros in premiums over the term.
The trade-off you accept
Without insurance, any outstanding balance becomes part of your estate if you die. Heirs can accept the estate and pay, or renounce it. If Martine leaves a €10,000 savings account, her children will settle the balance easily. With no savings, death-only cover is the wiser choice, and it costs far less than a full policy.
Pawn loans and lifetime mortgages: security without a policy
These two products settle the insurance question through physical security. Pawn lending is the monopoly of the Crédit Municipal public pawnbrokers under article L514-1 of the Monetary and Financial Code. The lifetime mortgage is governed by articles L315-1 and following of the Consumer Code and is offered by only a handful of providers.
What a pawn loan costs in Paris
At the Crédit Municipal de Paris, the loan is about 60% of the item's estimated resale value, sometimes up to 80%. The APR is 4.25% up to €500, 9.90% from €501 to €6,000 and 5.30% above that, with a 1% custody fee from €500. No proof of income is needed below €10,000.
Example: €2,500 against jewellery at 71
Robert, 71, has to settle a €2,500 boiler invoice before his pension arrives. He deposits gold jewellery valued at €4,200 and walks out with €2,500 the same day. Repaid after six months, the loan costs him about €124 of interest plus €25 of custody fee, with no medical formalities whatsoever.
The lifetime mortgage for large needs
From 60, a homeowner can borrow a share of the property's value with no monthly payments and no insurance, with a minimum of €50,000 at Foncier Reversimmo. The fixed rate is high, around 6.75% in Banque Populaire's October 2026 examples, and interest compounds over time: keep this for major projects.
Pitfalls when you go without insurance
Dropping insurance should not become a reflex. A number of older borrowers get into trouble because they picked the least regulated product, or misjudged the burden left to a partner. These mistakes come up again and again.
- Turning to revolving credit because insurance was refused: it costs far more than an instalment loan.
- Pawning a family heirloom you cannot redeem: if the contract is not renewed, the item is sold at auction.
- Borrowing alone and uninsured when your spouse depends on your income to keep up the payments.
- Paying fees to an intermediary before any money is released: the classic sign of a fake-loan scam.
How to choose the right product
The choice turns on three variables: the amount, the term and what you own. For under €3,000 over a few months, a pawn loan is unbeatable for speed. Between €3,000 and €30,000, a personal loan is usually cheapest. Above that, without enough income, only property or financial assets will let you borrow.
The policy advance deserves its own mention. Gérard, 66, holds a €60,000 assurance-vie opened in 2009. Rather than cash it in and lose his tax allowance, he asks his insurer for a €12,000 advance to help his daughter. The rate is set by the policy, often linked to the euro fund's return, and he repays freely within the agreed period, generally three years and renewable.
Steps to obtain a loan without insurance
- Work out precisely how much you need and over what period you can repay.
- Simulate a personal loan with two or three lenders, unticking the optional insurance.
- If a valuable item sits unused in a drawer, simulate a pawn loan online as well.
- Compare the APR, total cost and how quickly the funds are available.
- Sign, then if necessary use the 14-day cooling-off period under article L312-19 of the Consumer Code.
English-speaking residents sometimes hold a life policy taken out in their home country. It will not normally be accepted as French borrower insurance, but it still protects your heirs, who can use the payout to clear an uninsured French loan.
Frequently asked questions
Can a lender force its own insurance on me for a personal loan? It can require cover as a condition, but you may take out a policy with another insurer offering equivalent protection.
Is there an age limit for borrowing without insurance? No law sets one. Lenders look mainly at your age at the end of the loan, each with its own internal cap. Pawn loans and lifetime mortgages have no upper limit.
Is a policy advance a loan? Legally it is an advance from the insurer, repayable and bearing interest. It needs no insurance and no paperwork, and the policy keeps its original start date for tax purposes.
Will my children inherit my debt? Only if they accept the estate. They can accept it up to its net value, which limits their liability to what they receive.
