A prêt d'honneur (literally a "loan on trust") is an interest-free personal loan with no security, granted to someone who is creating or taking over a business so that they can strengthen their equity. A retiree is just as eligible as anyone else: networks such as Initiative France and Réseau Entreprendre assess the project, not your date of birth. What an honour loan never funds is private spending.
The situation is common. A manager draws his pension at 64 and buys a shop; a retired nurse opens a consultancy; a craftsman passes on his skills through a training business. France's cumul emploi-retraite rules (combining a pension with earned income) make this possible, and the pension keeps the household afloat during the launch, which tends to reassure lending committees. Retirees who moved to France from the UK, Ireland or the US can apply on the same basis, provided the business is set up and registered in France.
How an honour loan works
The loan is made to you as an individual, and you then put it into your company's share capital or a shareholder's current account. It carries no interest and needs neither a personal guarantee nor a mortgage. Its real value is leverage: by boosting the company's equity, it lets you obtain a professional bank loan several times larger, because the bank is taking less risk.
Repayment is spread over several years, often with a deferral at the start, and comes out of your personal income. For a retiree, the pension is exactly what covers the repayments, even if the business takes a while to pay you a salary. Amounts, terms and deferrals vary between local associations, so ask the platform covering your area.
Check the work-and-pension rules before you start
The combination is unlimited when all your pensions, basic and supplementary, are drawn at the full rate: earnings then come on top with no ceiling. Since September 2023 this full combination can also build new pension rights, within certain limits. If you have not reached the full rate, a ceiling applies and exceeding it cuts your pension, so ask your pension fund for a simulation before you plan the financing. A UK or US state pension is governed by its own country's rules; the UK state pension, for instance, has no earnings test.
Your legal form matters too. A micro-entreprise is enough for consulting or low-investment services, while buying a going concern is usually done through a company, a SARL or SAS, which carries the bank loan. Social contributions remain payable even in retirement and must appear in the forecast you present to the committee.
A typical funding plan for a retiree's takeover
Michel, 64, a retired banker with a net pension of €2,900, is buying a bookshop for €60,000 including stock. He puts in €10,000 of savings, obtains a €12,000 honour loan repayable over five years, which is €200 a month with no interest, and a bank lends €38,000 over seven years, partly guaranteed by France Active. His pension absorbs the personal repayment with ease.
| Source | Amount | Borrower | Repayment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal contribution | €10,000 | Michel | None |
| Interest-free honour loan | €12,000 | Michel, personally | €200 a month over 60 months |
| Professional bank loan | €38,000 | The company | Over seven years, from trading income |
| Total requirement | €60,000 | — | — |
Why age matters less than people think
Because the network asks for no security, age plays no part in the decision to grant an honour loan. Only the strength of the project and your personal ability to repay count. On the bank side, the professional loan is taken out by the company, not by Michel. The bank will look at business continuity and may ask for key-person insurance or a succession plan. That is something to prepare for, not a reason for exclusion.
Which networks grant honour loans
Initiative France brings together more than 200 local associations that grant interest-free, unsecured honour loans and support founders through the start-up phase. Its "Entreprendre à tout âge" programme points out that the over-45s, together with the under-30s, make up half of the entrepreneurs it backs. It is the first port of call for buying a shop or launching a service business.
Réseau Entreprendre targets projects that create jobs. Its approval committee must decide unanimously, and successful applicants receive an honour loan plus two years of mentoring by a business owner, with a meeting every month. A retiree buying a small company with staff fits its model well.
France Active and bank loan guarantees
France Active does more than lend. It guarantees up to 80 % of the bank loan for projects with a social or local impact, or for founders who have been refused credit. For a retiree setting up in a rural area or creating a social and solidarity economy organisation, that guarantee makes the file acceptable to the bank.
Steps to obtain an honour loan
- Ask your pension fund to confirm which work-and-pension regime applies to you and any ceilings.
- Draft a three-year forecast: turnover, costs, social contributions and your own pay.
- Contact the Initiative platform or the Réseau Entreprendre branch in your département.
- Work on the file with a project officer, then present it to the approval committee.
- Take the honour loan approval to two or three banks to obtain the professional loan.
- Request a France Active guarantee if the bank wants extra security.
- Sign the loans, then follow the support programme during the first years.
Refusal reasons and frequent errors
Committees first reject projects with no proven market: an extended hobby with no identified customers will not convince them. The second reason is the lack of a bank: an honour loan accompanies bank funding and does not replace it. The third is a personal budget that is too tight, where the pension cannot cover repayments if the business is slow to take off.
Structuring mistakes are just as frequent: leaving social contributions out of the forecast, breaching the earnings ceiling and losing part of the pension, putting in every penny of savings with no safety cushion, or pledging the family home as a personal guarantee when a France Active or Bpifrance guarantee would have done.
Other funding for a retired entrepreneur
For a small project, the Adie grants professional microcredit to people without access to bank credit, together with support. Crowdfunding, whether rewards-based or through loans, lets you test demand while raising money. Relatives can contribute through a properly documented family loan, which is far safer than a verbal arrangement.
Chambers of commerce and chambers of trades point founders towards regional aid, sometimes in the form of repayable advances. For a purely personal need, however, an honour loan is the wrong door: look instead at personal microcredit, the interest-free loans of some pension funds or a standard personal loan.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a maximum age for an honour loan? There is no legal ceiling. Networks examine the viability of the project and your personal repayment capacity, which a regular pension tends to strengthen.
Can I get an honour loan to help my son or daughter start a business? No, the loan goes to the person running the project. You can, however, take a stake in the company, make a gift or guarantee your child's bank loan.
Is an honour loan taxable? No, a loan is not income. It is not taxed, and its repayments are not deductible from your personal income either.
What if the business fails? You still owe the honour loan personally. Associations may agree to reschedule it in case of difficulty, which is why you should keep some headroom in your pension budget.
Do I have to stop all salaried work to qualify? No, but as a retiree you must have drawn your pensions and comply with the work-and-pension rules to carry on the new activity.
